Competition - Win a copy of the movie "Freestyle" on DVD

To celebrate the new Brit-flick, FREESTYLE released in cinemas, Sky Box Office, iTunes, Filmflex and Lovefilm on 26 February, we're giving away 5 copies of the DVD released on March 1st. See below for details.

Ondene Marchant (Lucy Stanhope-Bosumpim) is beautiful, talented and destined to read Law at Oxford. She has spent her whole life following demanding study plans laid down by her ambitious mother Hyacinth (Suzann Mclean), a high powered barrister determined to push her only child to the top.

After years of obedience, Ondene is desperate to break free from the restrictions her studies have placed on her life. She soon discovers freestyle basketball and takes up the offer of lessons from charismatic student Leon (Arinze Kene). When Hyacinth finds out, she resolves to put an end to the relationship.

Although Leon's fighting against the odds to ensure he gains his own educational qualifications to pull himself up and gain stability, Hyacinth is convinced he is a bad influence on Odene because he lives on the local council estate - a place she herself escaped from long ago.

As Leon faces prejudice from his peers for a desire to concentrate on his studies, Ondene faces discrimination on the basketball courts for her passion and their talent to FREESTYLE.

As romance blossoms, the sweethearts face an uphill struggle as they try to succeed in life and love.

FREESTYLE released in cinemas, Sky Box Office, iTunes, Filmflex and Lovefilm 26 February and on DVD 1 March

Mark 'Swarf' Calape official website (Animaineax - Move Like Michael Jackson/So You Think You Can Dance)

Our site stats have shown how many people have been looking for Mark Calape's website recently (seriously, if it wasn't for the interest in him we'd probably get half the visits to the blog that we get in a day!).

Until recently a website for Calape didn't exist. Animaineaxs.com is currently under construction. So what do you do in the mean time? Start up your own website (that's how we started)!

I'd say it's a work in progress at the moment, but already full of (deliberate?) typos and information about the Animaineax that nearly every media outlet has ignored in its coverage, plus personal photos from his tour with Jay Sean, Pink Mafia, Boy Blue and Zoonation and appearances with personalities like, oh, I don't know, Nelson Mandela!

The blog should also pick up eventually, although there are only two posts at the moment, but to make up for it the video page is full of YouTube clips from the recent TV appearances on So You Think You Can Dance and Move Like Michael Jackson.

I personally recommend Swarf's Cinema page with the overly dramatic video of him doing hat tricks!

Site speed is a bit of an issue at the moment (maybe I've a bad connection?) but it will be the place to be to pick up information straight from the source (I'm guessing updates will be posted on Mark's fan page).

#NewMusicMonday Bukola - Make Your Move

Make Your Move is the new single from Bukola - the London based rhythm and soul artist and is released on 8 March on Slip Disc and features MG. This head-nodding, foot-tapping track features Bukola on soulful vocals with Bukola collaborator D'Syfa on studio duty. MG - who is also featured on Groove Armada's Superstylin makes a guest appearance giving the track a bashment (lite) edge.

Make Your Move spans soul and funky, with a sprinkling of dancehall. Bukola has received superb acknowledgement across the UK and South Africa with previous tracks Keep High, Hypnotise and her album Which Way - which caused a storm in the US, South Africa and the Far East.

#SYTYCD So You Think You Can Dance: Did Charlie deserve to win?

The day after the So You Think You Can Dance final aired I was checking the site analytics for TooMuchFlavour. One of the search queries for the site was "did Charlie Bruce deserve to win?"

It's one of those questions everyone who opposes the public's decision tend to ask: "Okay, they gave us a winner, but let's look at the alternative," like "Should Susan Boyle have won, or Diversity?"
Okay, let's not go down that road...

The So You Think You Can dance final was an interesting one, in part due to the fact that Robbie suffered a dislocated shoulder putting him out of the competition for the final and slightly throwing proceedings off track as producers figured out how to cover Robbie's non-participation.

That left - and what a story for TooMuchFlavour - two hip hop dancers against a training dancer.
Technically (the dance term, not a superlative), in the critical eye of a dancer, Charlie wasn't the best choice.

Her 'storyline' in the series was the baby of the series. "I might be the young one, but I want to show everyone what I can do." Cue the emotional music and reflecting back on not getting West End auditions; how she wanted to be taken seriously.

Even Arlene, one of the judges was quoted saying to Charlie:
"You have just changed through the night and grown through the series. What you have done tonight is mega, honey, mega."

Lizzie's storyline was the shy individual but confident dancer. Tommy the lonely Swede with no family in England to root for him. Despite both of the programme storylines, Both Lizzie (click for biography) and Tommy (click for biography) have had successful and varied careers.

Come the night of the final, the judges had no choice in the final decision. All of the dancers pulled their fingers out. Tommy's solo was impeccable.

Yet despite the "you've grown" narrative, and Arlene's "that solo was one of your best, it wasn't necessarily your best" (WTF?!) comment, her solos have been consistently weak: show me one moment where she listened to the music in her solo routine:

This was a competition to find Britain's best dancer by testing them in all styles, yet Charlie hasn't left her comfort zone and tried anything new, limiting her repertoire to flexible leg lifts, no handed cartwheels and splits with the odd rump shape: disco dancing and gymnastics.

However, this was also a competition where voting where the public phone vote decides. Maybe the storylines worked in influencing people's choices. Maybe people could see Lizzie and Charlie's competencies and voted for the underdog?

Tommy Franzén's fan page on Facebook reported (rather, questioned) whether fans had encountered a busy tone when calling in to vote for him. Guess what? The BBC removed the comment.

Fair or unfair editing to create unbalanced storylines, rumours of phone line problems and fixing, or bad losers?

Either way, Charlie won the £100,000 prize and will be dancing in Hollywood. The other competitors will no doubt receive plenty of work offers.

The truth is despite her competencies in classical styles of dance, she'll need to up her game and expand her repertoire for the American version of the show - out there, home of studios like Millennium Dance, the competition is a lot higher.

We wish Charlie the best of luck in her future career, but for goodness sake, work on your musicality!

#newmusicmonday Fliptrix - You'll Never Change download; Theory of Rhyme album info

Hailing from South East London, rapper Fliptrix has been creating a storm since 07’s Force Fed Imagery. Bringing intelligent, streetwise lyrics, high-energy delivery and a myriad of original and distinctive flows. A succession of scene stealing features later, and Fliptrix is ready to drop an album that will set the bar for rap albums extremely high in 2010.

Every song conveys a heartfelt message, with conceptual rhymes making this release not just another straight up rap record. The cleverly scribed Dream Coat to the self-reflecting My Soul, sit equally as comfortably with the straight up bangers like Monday To Sunday, which opens the album in ferocious style. Contributing production and storming vocals on Get Involved is the YNR general himself, Jehst. The rickety, pounding instrumental shows Billy Brimstone’s consistent ability to create the best hip hop the UK has to offer.

Following from his successful 2009, receiving airplay on BBC Radio One, Maida Vale Sessions and a slot on the 07 Electric Proms, producer, friend and long time collaborator Runone takes a third of the production of Fliptrix’s album on his shoulders. Bringing his unique instrumental style to the record, Runone’s beats tie the strong vocals together on this solid LP. Chemo, Jon Phonics, Verb T and 184 also provide fantastic production – making this LP a rich, diverse tapestry.

Fliptrix has been a consistent live performer in recent years, regularly tearing up open mics and being booked across the UK and Europe supporting various big acts including Foreign Beggars, Killa Kela, Taskforce, Jehst, Kyza, Mystro, Eksman, Loefah & Kromestar. Currently touring with Verb T and Kashmere, they continue to deliver exciting live performances across the country.

The very same charisma, energy and presence of his live show emanates through every song on Theory Of Rhyme, making this a necessary listen for early 2010.

Charlie Bruce Wins So You Think You Can Dance!

Charlie Bruce is the winner of So You Think You Can Dance.

She placed in the final two with Tommy Franzén after placing ahead of Lizzie Gough who was the runner up.

The youngest and least experienced of the contestants, Charlie Bruce was left against experienced contemporary breaker Tommy Franzén as last two dancers in the competition. After enduring the length of Robbie Williams' musical set and a 'best of' reel, Cat Deeley announced the winner.

Voted by the viewing public as "Britain's Favourite Dancer," Charlie burst into tears upon hearing the result, while the judges praised her for today's performances.

Charlie Bruce takes home the £100,000 prize and will fly to Hollywood to perform in front of 20 million people in the American version of So You Think You Can Dance.

You can leave your comments below. Did Charlie deserve to win? Who do did you vote for?

#SYTYCD So You Think You Can Dance - The final and the press!

It's finally here. The end of an era. Well, the end of a series. Six rounds of So You Think You Can Dance and the series has drawn to an end. Tonight is the SYTYCD final and someone will walk (or salsa, or six step, or contemporary roll) out of the BBC studios £100,000 richer with an American visa application to fill in.

The series has been good, but not quite perfect. Some viewers and critics on the Twittosphere are annoyed by the swooping camera ruining the viewing of routines, while others expected a big budget production to match the American version.

People might also have noticed that every guest act who performed in the dance off shows were a production of a reality TV shows (except for the final). Lemar, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, JLS... suspicious!

Anyway, there's no point in moaning about it. SYTYCD was free to view, unlike Sky One's Got To Dance demanding a subscription to Sky. No thanks.

Here's a quick summary of So You Think You Can Dance as told through the press:

There were the scares at the start of the show before it even went into production. Originally uptake for the audition process was slow, and when low numbers turned up to auditions, rumours were heard (and denied) that BBC producers called up Sky One's Got To Dance tean to find out if it was the same at their auditions.

The audition show was only 70 minutes long before the series jumped straight into the live shows, which disappointed Nigel Lythgoe, criticising the editors for not spending more time following the audition process.

But SYTYCD trumped Sky One in ratings, pulling in 6.9million viewers during its Saturday prime time slot for the launch show, casting a huge shadow over Sky's 926,000.

The papers broke the news that Mark Calape had already won a TV dance competition, Move Like Michael Jackson as part of Animaineax. A BBC spokesman commented: "These are very different competitions."

After that any press went a bit quiet for a while, until last week...

The week before the grand final, Robbie White was hospitalised after dislocating his shoulder during a hip hop rehearsal, ruining his chance of winning. The choreographer of the piece, Simeon Qsyea broke the news on his Twitter, which we later picked up on after confirming it from a blog on The Stage.

Former contestants Mark Calape, Alistair Postlethwaite and Drew McOnie have been drafted back in to cover for the unforunate Robbie, sharing one partner routine each - although none can win the prize - that's the official word from the BBC.

Today, the finalists who are left are Charlie Bruce, Lizzie Gough and Tommy Franzen.

To find out who wins, tune in at 7.45!

#SYTYCD So You Think You Can Dance - Robbie White suffers injury; Alistair Postlethwaite to return

News broke tonight (with thanks to The Stage for bringing it to my attention) that Robbie White (aka the Stockport Spider) has had to pull from BBC So You Think You Can Dance following an injury during rehearsal.

Replacing him will be former show contestant voted off last week, Alistair Postlethwaite, who will take his place in the final to win the £100,000 prize and get to perform in Hollywood. The Lancashire Evening Post has reported extent of Robbie's injury as a dislocated shoulder while practising a hip hop routine.

Earlier on in the day I noticed a tweet on Simeon Qysea's Twitter (one of the So You Think You Can Dance hip hop choreographers, and one of the founders of BirdGang) saying:
"Rehearsals ended up with the Hospital!! its all gone a bit crazy right now........"(sic)
The tweet also copied through to his Facebook page where concerned fans of the show posted responses, to which he was obliged to say:
"due to contract not at liberty to say but they are fine just means they are being replaced X" (sic)
Due to the show contracts, it was difficult to know which dancer was injured that early on. Later on in the day the news broke to back up the rumours.

So far the BBC have not yet issued any statements on either the So You Think You Can Dance site or on the BBC SYTYCD Twitter. We'll do our best to keep you posted!

We've been working non stop and I feel like we've done loads...

Finally getting rid of that ugly ceiling, the plaster board has started to go up in the lobby for now... more to follow!

My lovely father has been painting like mad throughout the building... It's mad how a bit of paint can make such a huge difference!

The most exciting bit is that the partition frame is up and ready to be boarded. Donato, my multi-talented friend has built a frame for the doors into the studio. It's strange because you can walk through the partition but the doorway is closed! He he.

I feel like I'm in full throttle mode now, so hopefully you'll be seeing loads of progress every day...

Sooo... stay tuned!

#newmusicmonday Bobby Evans - "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz"

It’s time… to put your quarters up and check out the hottest video on the planet: Bobby Evans’ smash hit Delicious Vinyl single Freak-A-Zoid Robotz, directed by Marcus Herring. Enter an arcade game world where a Tron state of mind and fly moves preside, where metallic Sorayama-inspired robots do choreographed dances and fight 8-bit battles to the death.

About the video:
Director Marcus Herring said: “The visual look of the video was inspired by the beauty of low resolution pixel art in classic arcade games. I was intrigued by the idea that a face can still look beautiful even when it is scaled down to a resolution of 12 pixels tall.”

As Delicious Vinyl Curator Rick Ross, who produced the video, says: "We really aimed to break that proverbial fourth wall in the gaming universe — the fine line between man, woman and machine."

The video's concept was based on an original arcade game specially designed for the 12-inch artwork for Bobby Evan's Freak-A Zoid Robotz. Herring expanded upon that arcade game concept, fleshing it out with a video full of players/gamers including L.A. Rap duo The Keyishe, Team G, performance artist Yasmine Kittles, dancer/choreographer Amanda Furches, dancer Erin Beneze, Anthony Julio (creator of the golden robot mask seen in the video) and the world famous KXLU DJ, Bianca Bracho.

Freak-A-Zoid Robotz is the lead track and theme song from Delicious Vinyl's critically lauded RMXXOLOGY album. The song itself is inspired by a truly obscure cut from deep in the Delicious Vinyl catalog: an electro-bass number called The Fine Line Between Hyper And Stupid that appeared on the b-side of Tone-Loc's 1990 single I Got It Going On. With Freak-A-Zoid Robots, Bobby Evans (half of L.A. hip-hop duo Brother Reade) has taken it back to the real pioneers of Miami Bass, with whip-it-good drums, ass-clapping bass, and synapse-snapping synthesizers...all perfect for robot booty shaking.

So today is a Sunday and yes, I'm working! Too Keen! Carrying on the painting in the more difficult areas as you'll see on the video. As well as this I have decided I want to get my office finished so I can have my computer at the studio (saving driving time!).

Managed to make it to B&Q to buy what I need to cover up the windows, although still debating if its a good or a bad idea? Opinions?

As always Ben makes an appearance on the video... He found an affiliation with the plaster board and just wouldn't move...

Natasha (member of my Adult Crew) decides to pop in and HELP but decides she wants to play narrator instead... Hmmm... watch her coverage!
