#NewMusicMonday - Ursula 1000 - Hey You featuring Fred Schneider download

Click here to download Ursula 1000 - Hey You with Fred Schneider (Shake edit)

Drenched in snarling fuzz guitars, savage drums and spooky organs, this new collection of tracks unleashes his technicolor take on this sound. A pinch of the old and a drop of the new, creating a brand new monster! Inspired by the classics like Count Five, The Sonics and the Nuggets and Back To The Grave collections to revivalists like The Gruesomes, Gravedigger V and The Dukes of Stratosphear, Ursula 1000 takes in this obsession and flips it for a new generation.

FUZZ features the inimitable Fred Schneider from The B-52s on the opening song, Hey You! Fred and his band paved the way of mixing b-movie surf trashiness and new wave as does Ursula with his blending vintage grooves with modern electronica, thus making the pairing a no-brainer. This is not pastiche but a re-invention!

Ursula 1000 is the alter ego of Brooklyn, New York based producer/DJ Alex Gimeno. His albums (four artists albums and two DJ mixed CDs) and live/radio mix sessions have taken on a broad scope of retro tinged spy grooves, bumping latin disco funk, hints of post punk, electro, go go and sleazy glam rock. You can hear it in his remixes for the likes of Quincy Jones, Felix Da Housecat, The Faint, Fort Knox Five to a slew of television remodels for themes to Sesame Street, The Powerpuff Girls, The Incredibles and Yo Gabba Gabba. Scenes for Sex And The City, Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother popped even more with a helping of a little Ursula as have campaigns for AT&T, Samsung, Adidas and Grand Marnier.

You can find him traveling the world dj-ing at places like Fabric, The Big Chill Festival, Shambhala or even at his home residencies at Trophy Bar and The Commodore. For a more obscure selection of songs that make him tick, check out his radio show, Guilty Pleasures on www.BrooklynRadio.com

FUZZ is released October 5 (digital) / October 19 (physical) on ESL Music

#NewMusicMonday Dennis Ferrer "Hey Hey" 20 minute mix download

Enter any fine house music club over the last few months and chances are you’ve heard Dennis Ferrer’s Hey Hey – this summer’s most talked about track - playing on the sound system.

Click here to download Dennis Ferrer 20 minute DJ Mix

An anthem in the truest sense, “Hey Hey” is captivating clubland and the airwaves with its flawless and much welcome return to the classic vocal house sound. The track has been heavily supported internationally by BBC Radio One tastemaker Pete Tong (among many other influential DJs) who called it “a return to the finest virtues of house music,” while the fans have spoken to the tune of over 3.5 million views (and counting) of the Hey Hey promo video.

Ready for a US takeover, Dennis Ferrer teams up with legendary New York City house music label Strictly Rhythm for the stunning new package – Hey Hey: The Remixes. This collection takes Ferrer’s gem under the remix knife with brand new interpretations from Deepah Ones, Kaytronik, Tom De Neef, Dim Chris, Crookers, Vandalism and a brand new lead mix from Friscia and Lamboy. To help celebrate this great new release, Strictly Rhythm presents the official music video for Hey Hey that acts as a perfect compliment to this instant classic.

A Grammy Nominee for his “Objektivity Mix" of Dido's Don't Believe In Love, Dennis Ferrer’s trademark is his skillful work with vocals and high production standards. He is considered a “producer’s producer” for crafting house music tracks with real instruments, analog production techniques and proper song structures. This is a rarity at a time when computer production methods are at an all time high. As a result, Dennis Ferrer has found a magic formula in Hey Hey that perfectly captures the classic vocal sound with a look to the future.

Ferrer has always been one to start a movement rather than follow one. Just as the dance music world was heading into the world of afro-centric house, Ferrer was there. And then, when it began to embrace the mix of tech and soul, Ferrer was there again, leading the way with his impeccable productions. And now as the world rediscovers a taste for classic vocal-based house, Dennis Ferrer’s at the forefront with Hey Hey. As Ferrer goes, it seems, so does electronic music – strictly speaking.

#NewMusicMonday - Mystro - Around My Way download

Click here to download Mystro - Around My Way

Flying in straight off the back of the monstrously witty 2009 Wrap Up Mystro delivers Around My Way produced by DJ Swerve [Kiss FM / Street Fighter Riddim], the first look into the mind of Digmund Freud taken from the EP of the same name.

The track is classic Mystro. Pitch perfect prose, laced with humour as sharp as… well hmmm something very very sharp!?! I’ll leave the punch lines to Mystro, as it’s clearly what he does best!

Just in case you didn’t know Mystro didn’t just appear out the blue yesterday, he’s done a few laps, some round the world! Having started rapping at the age of 13, after being inspired by the classic “Golden Era” of MCs, he first made his mark building a reputation as one of the UK hip hop’s brightest vocal talents while hosting and performing at a number of the biggest events of the time, including the iconic Kung Fu. He’s also collaborated with a who’s who of British heavy weights, including Black Twang, Rodney P and Ty. He’s released albums in Australia and currently hosts his own TV show on SPINE.TV.

DIGMUND FREUD is the next chapter!

#NewMusicMonday - Dead Prez - Turn Off The Radio Volume 4 Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz free download

Click here to download Dead Prez - Turn Off The Radio Volume 4 Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz

Turn Off the Radio Vol. 4 follows up to last year's Vol. 3 Pulse of the People with Green Lantern. Embodying the hip-hop duo's growth over the last decade, Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz is a result of the journey they have endured being signed to two major labels, touring globally, releasing solo projects, and launching their full multi-media brand Boss Up, Inc. M-1 and Stic.man bring this refined perspective while still utilizing their traditional take over trademark of flipping mainstream hits as demonstrated with their first two leaks, which are spins on B.O.B's Nothing On You and Drake's Far From Over.

"We wanted to just capture that love for hip hop. To give the people something for the summer that we could let folks know we still here, we doing well and we still growing," says Stic. "The hunger is there, the creativity is there, the flows are there, and the message is there. This is one of my favorite albums in the Turn off the Radio Series."

Reflective of their journey, the project also pays homage to the same Dead Prez that emerged at dawn of the 21st Century on Loud Records, bringing a revolutionary political consciousness to mainstream hip-hop with songs like I'm An African and Police State. Their bold lyrics and style rapidly developed a stronghold that has kept them at the forefront and made them the go to political hip-hop group with an impact that has brought about work with Jay-Z, Dave Chapelle, Kanye West, presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney, and countless other artists, academics, and political figures. They have inspired everyone from Nas to T.I. to Drake with their outspoken political audacity and knack for shedding light on life struggles.

#NewMusicMonday - Matisyahu - One Day video plus Akon Remix download

Mitisyahu - One Day

Watch the One Day video above above, or...

Grammy-nominated artist Matisyahu will release ‘Light’ on 21st June (100% Records), produced by David Kahne and featuring Stephen McGregor, Sly & Robbie, members of Fishbone and more.

Light which debuted in the top 20 on the US charts, finds the Hasidic Jewish musician from Crown Heights, Brooklyn displaying his one-of-a-kind voice in a variety of diverse genres, moving through his familiar reggae-soul stylings to dancehall, ska-inflected new wave, pop-rock and acoustic folk. Matisyahu blends infectious melodies and intricate production with classic messages of hope, peace and understanding to create a sound that is undeniably his own.

Produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Regina Spektor, Sublime), Light was recorded and mixed in Jamaica, New York, Los Angeles and Virginia. More recently, Matisyahu cut two more tracks with producer Dave McCracken and the Smeezintons. Of those two, One Day will be the first single from Light. It is an anthemic classic reggae track, showcasing Matisyahu's prolific lyrics and passionate vocals. In addition Matisyahu has re-recorded One Day with heavyweight R&B star Akon as a bonus track.

Several guest artists contributed to the record: son of legendary reggae artist Freddie McGregor and one of Jamaica's most innovative producers Stephen McGregor, ground-breaking Jamaican reggae rhythm section Sly & Robbie, noted production team Eric Krasno & Adam Deitch of Fyre Dept. and Fish and Norwood Fisher of the L.A. alt-punk-ska band Fishbone. Jamaican nyabinghi drummers Delroy Williams as Putus Roots, Samuel Count Ossie “Time” Williams and Nambo Robinson and experimental turntablist Ooah from the Glitch Mob, amongst others, also contributed to Light. Track number 8 from the album On Nature is now available for free download from Matisyahu’s site matisyahuworld.co.uk.

Matisyahu emerged in 2004 with his debut album Shake Off the Dust…Rise. With the release of Live at Stubb's (2005), which reached #1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and Youth (2006), which debuted at #4 on Billboard's Top 200 and reached #1 on the Reggae Albums chart, Matisyahu gained considerable critical acclaim. Both albums subsequently went gold in the US and ‘Youth’ was nominated for a Grammy for Best Reggae Album.

#NewMusicMonday - Akala - Yours and My Children

AKALA - Yours And My Children

Over the last few years Kingslee ‘Akala’ Daley, 26, has emerged from London’s hip hop underground and into the mainstream as one of the leaders of a new British artistic renaissance. Bursting into the underground scene in 2004, he made history by being the first unsigned artist to have a video appear on MTV UK’s ‘TRL’. 2006 saw his first album It’s Not A Rumour drop with trance-sampling smash single Shakespeare being play-listed and championed on BBC’s Radio 1 via the support of influential DJ, Zane Lowe.
The album received critical acclaim and earned Akala the ‘Best Hip Hop Artist’ award at the 2006 MOBO awards, beating Kanye West. Reflecting the disorder and flux of contemporary life, Akala’s second album Freedom Lasso was an energetic visionary essay on modern life, drawing influences from the whole spectrum of music – rap, rock, electro, punk and folk. Summer 2010 see’s Akala return, poised to flip-turn the UK music scene once again with his third effort.

DoubleThink is the incredible new album from Britain’s acclaimed hip hop artist, Akala, released nationwide on 3rd May 2010.

DoubleThink documents harrowing moments of city life: in Yours and My Children, a track reflecting three months Akala spent in Brazil he talks about Favela children being killed by police. But Akala's unquenchable appetite for intricate wordplay and his teacher's instinctive awareness that heavy topics need to be got across lightly mean that, despite the often serious points, the record is an affirmative and often explosively joyful experience.

#NewMusicMonday - Nneka "Suffri" and Scala live show details

Nneka live show at Scala, King's Cross

Nneka's extremely successful second album No Longer At Ease was released in the UK last August. It was an album described as "the most invigorating, innovative and powerful release of the year" by the Independent, that gave birth to a bonafide hit single with Heartbeat reaching BBC Radio 1's A-List; and saw her awarded a 2009 MOBO Award for Best African Act. Amazon.co.uk recently included Nneka in their 2010 Emerging Artists alongside Ellie Goulding, Delphic and The Drums.

Having toured almost non-stop she is now making waves in the USA. SPIN have named her one of the 10 artists to watch in 2010, Rolling Stone gave a four star review and a David Letterman 'Breakout Artist' performance saw her reach her biggest audience yet.

It's a testament to the strength of Nneka's talent that her success has grown by word of mouth, on the quality of her albums and the intensity of her live performance. She is not a big-label product, forced down people's throats by marketing dollars.

Her audience - and there are hundreds of thousands of them, across two continents - have sought her out, because there will always be a demand for music that does more than just entertain, but touches something universal. As she puts it herself: "I do it in a sweet way - but I sing to speak the truth."

Nneka plays London's Scala on Wednesday 28th April.

Venue: Scala, 275 Pentonville RD, Kings Cross, London, N1 9NL

Chima Anya - Death music video

Chima Anya - Death

Recognise some of the biography below? Maybe because you read it on our Live Vibe April page where Chima will be a guest performer at Live Vibe this Saturday 17 April. Read about his guest performance here. >>

25 year old (Dr) Chima Anya has seen a lot. An avid hip-hop fan since birth he has watched how it has evolved and devolved over the years while simultaneously perfecting his own grasp of the art. This experience multiplied by the wealth of life stories witnessed by working as a junior doctor in fields ranging from geriatric to paediatric medicine has culminated in an artist of intrigue.

As a hip-hop MC his credentials are stellar - having already shared stages with hip hop legends KRS 1, Amp Fiddler, Flava Flav and recently opened up for Jay Electronica and Brother Ali. His music has also received support from Mary Anne Hobbes (Radio 1) "A Dope ass MC," Huw Stephen's (Radio 1) "I'm sure we will be playing more of this man" Ras Kwame (1Xtra) "Futuristic hip hop- we are looking for the doctor to come and save hip-hop," DJ 279 (Choice FM) "Hope yet for UK hiphop," Shortee Blitz (Kiss FM), Excalibah, Ace and Vis (1Xtra), The Temporary Residents and many more radio stations worldwide.

This, his debut album, "NEW DAY" reflects the change that is needed to effect some balance in the uk hiphop scene. Entirely produced by ASTROSNARE, the two hooked up having ascended to the top of the hiphop scene in Oxford making it a natural alliance. The first double AA side single saw CHIMA enlisting some fellow UK hiphop Luminaries SOWETO KINCH and JEHST in joining his campaign to bring some element of swagger, style and substance back in the scene.

CHIMA recently supported JAY ELECTRONICA when he hit the UK a performance that was only outshone by the man himself! CHIMA will also be supporting BROTHER ALI on his one off date @ London’s CARGO on the 17th March.

#NewMusicMonday - Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Get Better

Click here to download le sac vs Scroobius Pip - Get Better (Villa Vocal Remix)

Watch the official video is at the bottom of this blog

With the free-flowing rhyme’n’bass opener Sick Tonight, old school dancefloor hip-hop of The Beat and the euphoric Italo-disco of Get Better, le sac Vs Pip have delivered a second album of beat led polemics; instantly danceable, yet increasingly vital, The Logic Of Chance is a great leap forward for alternative conscious pop.

With a microscope on violent crime stats (Great Britain), a declaration on the individuals role in a Democracy (Stake A Claim) and the perils of late night rail travel (Last Train Home), there is little slight of hand or ironic shape pulling here; Scroobius Pip delivers direct and true on the state of the nation, while dan le sac delivers his most advanced and eclectic soundtrack yet.

Despite growing up in the same Essex village Stanford Le Hope, the pair’s paths had barely crossed before they shared a Christmas season working at the Lakeside branch of HMV.  After a brief creative courtship – sharing Myspace links and remixes – their very first collaboration struck gold. Hot off the CDR burner, their first song Thou Shalt Always Kill was sent to XFM’s John Kennedy in demo form and within 24 hours Kennedy had played the track on his show. Pip swiftly set up a myspace page with their solitary track… “Suddenly it went crazy - everyone was emailing the track to other people, so the only thing to do was borrow £200 and make a video.” That video has now chalked up 2.5million views on youtube and the single’s hastily arranged release on Lex cracked the Top 40.

Shunning the inevitable major label overtures, Messrs le sac and Pip opted to sign to Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label, ensuring that their critically acclaimed debut album became one of the leading independent releases of 2008.   Released in May ’08, Angles arrived just 12 months after the first fruits of their partnership had hit the airwaves.  The duo’s welcome but unexpected rise, saw them working on tracks for their debut in the back of Pip’s Toyota Space Wagon, in between the growing list of festival, TV and radio engagements. That this ad-hoc germination should produce such a cohesive and thought provoking work, is testament to dan le sac’s production work and the enduring appeal of Pip’s word play.

Angles entered the Top 30 and in the subsequent 18 months, the duo has toured Europe and the US to an expanding live following.  Visually and musically dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip defy any prefab industry model, their towering structures of Casio enthused electro-hip-pop often cutting against the conventions of radio programming. And yet they have become airwave and chart regulars, producing the salient singles Beat That My Heart Skipped, Look For The Woman and the Radiohead sampling A Letter From God To Man.

#NewMusicMonday - Kil Ripkin - Mindfree

This week's #NewMusicMonday has a New York vibe to it with Kil Ripkin - Mind Free off the album The Balancing Act on Soulspazm Records
A&R: Torae
Produced by Nyce & Don Newkirk.
Edited by Nathan Brue.

Hip hop is a culture that was created by and for the people, and when it comes to exibiting that love and passion for the art, nobody displays it like Kil Ripkin the Genereal, AKA The Ghetto Correspondent.

Growing up in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn N.Y., Kil set out on his journey to be the next big thing in hip hop. Kil began as a solo artist quietly establishing his name as some one to be wreckon with, earning the respect of his peers alike. Kil began producing his own music working under the tutelage of his big bro, songwriter, producer and engineer Don Newkirk (Smoking Heads). Kil also sharpend his skills working with long time engineer Filthy Rich (Yosumi Entertainment). Quickly establishing himself as an up and coming producer going under the name of (Storm) thru out the five boroughs, Kil hooked up with Boot Camp Affiliates Mighty Real and Rebel X.

They formed the rap alliance called the "Supreme Forces" who featured the likes of Space, Telepathic and the Young Veteran Torae. Working on a Rebel X solo project, Kil and Reb decided to form the New York underground group "The F.E.D.S". The two were a deadly combo releasing several underground hits including the single released on Step In Deep Productions, titled Drama featuring Rasheeda. Kil has put in work with several other artist and groups like, I.G.T formerly of loud records, Get Doe Entertainment, Stix (Horror City), Kings Kounty Records, The Plague, and several comilation albums most notably Game Over released on Yosumi Records.

Credits also include co writing and producing songs on 40 Acres, Get on The Bus and Crooklyn soundtracks, and most of the production on Torae's Coney Island Finest mix tape.

After years of producing for several artist and the split of the FEDS, Rip turned his focus back to his solo career and started working on the revolutionary banger Black Power Black Love The Buz CD, with production from Kil, Don Newkirk and Valentine of I.G.T. The album became the theme music for the revolutionary Uhuru movement that was taking place in Brooklyn, and Kil's passion grew even more to get his message across. Kil's Stage prowess filled many venues throughout the New York area which made his shows the place to be.

Off the success of Black Power Black Love, Kil and his Coney Island bretheren Torae continued to groom their work together and with the help of then manager (Squirrel) Attic Entertainment, they linked up with up and coming DJ Vega Bennenton and his partner Wally Suede and together they formed the hip hop super group The Coalescence. They released the underground hit Promises and the group was nominated for two undergroung music awards including song of the year.

The Coalescence will be back in the lab soon but until then expect alot of heat from the General starting with the Balancing Act produced by Mikal Evans (Deep Rooted) Raticus and Eric G. The music is soulful, truthful, spiritual and rebelious. Surely after one listen to Kil Ripkin you will realize very quickly what hip hop truly sounds like.

#newmusicmonday Fliptrix - You'll Never Change download; Theory of Rhyme album info

Hailing from South East London, rapper Fliptrix has been creating a storm since 07’s Force Fed Imagery. Bringing intelligent, streetwise lyrics, high-energy delivery and a myriad of original and distinctive flows. A succession of scene stealing features later, and Fliptrix is ready to drop an album that will set the bar for rap albums extremely high in 2010.

Every song conveys a heartfelt message, with conceptual rhymes making this release not just another straight up rap record. The cleverly scribed Dream Coat to the self-reflecting My Soul, sit equally as comfortably with the straight up bangers like Monday To Sunday, which opens the album in ferocious style. Contributing production and storming vocals on Get Involved is the YNR general himself, Jehst. The rickety, pounding instrumental shows Billy Brimstone’s consistent ability to create the best hip hop the UK has to offer.

Following from his successful 2009, receiving airplay on BBC Radio One, Maida Vale Sessions and a slot on the 07 Electric Proms, producer, friend and long time collaborator Runone takes a third of the production of Fliptrix’s album on his shoulders. Bringing his unique instrumental style to the record, Runone’s beats tie the strong vocals together on this solid LP. Chemo, Jon Phonics, Verb T and 184 also provide fantastic production – making this LP a rich, diverse tapestry.

Fliptrix has been a consistent live performer in recent years, regularly tearing up open mics and being booked across the UK and Europe supporting various big acts including Foreign Beggars, Killa Kela, Taskforce, Jehst, Kyza, Mystro, Eksman, Loefah & Kromestar. Currently touring with Verb T and Kashmere, they continue to deliver exciting live performances across the country.

The very same charisma, energy and presence of his live show emanates through every song on Theory Of Rhyme, making this a necessary listen for early 2010.

#newmusicmonday Bobby Evans - "Freak-A-Zoid Robotz"

It’s time… to put your quarters up and check out the hottest video on the planet: Bobby Evans’ smash hit Delicious Vinyl single Freak-A-Zoid Robotz, directed by Marcus Herring. Enter an arcade game world where a Tron state of mind and fly moves preside, where metallic Sorayama-inspired robots do choreographed dances and fight 8-bit battles to the death.

About the video:
Director Marcus Herring said: “The visual look of the video was inspired by the beauty of low resolution pixel art in classic arcade games. I was intrigued by the idea that a face can still look beautiful even when it is scaled down to a resolution of 12 pixels tall.”

As Delicious Vinyl Curator Rick Ross, who produced the video, says: "We really aimed to break that proverbial fourth wall in the gaming universe — the fine line between man, woman and machine."

The video's concept was based on an original arcade game specially designed for the 12-inch artwork for Bobby Evan's Freak-A Zoid Robotz. Herring expanded upon that arcade game concept, fleshing it out with a video full of players/gamers including L.A. Rap duo The Keyishe, Team G, performance artist Yasmine Kittles, dancer/choreographer Amanda Furches, dancer Erin Beneze, Anthony Julio (creator of the golden robot mask seen in the video) and the world famous KXLU DJ, Bianca Bracho.

Freak-A-Zoid Robotz is the lead track and theme song from Delicious Vinyl's critically lauded RMXXOLOGY album. The song itself is inspired by a truly obscure cut from deep in the Delicious Vinyl catalog: an electro-bass number called The Fine Line Between Hyper And Stupid that appeared on the b-side of Tone-Loc's 1990 single I Got It Going On. With Freak-A-Zoid Robots, Bobby Evans (half of L.A. hip-hop duo Brother Reade) has taken it back to the real pioneers of Miami Bass, with whip-it-good drums, ass-clapping bass, and synapse-snapping synthesizers...all perfect for robot booty shaking.
